La Vienne has its capital in Poitiers, right in the centre of the department. Poitiers is a university town and famed amongst the English as being the seat of Eleanor of Acquitaine and the baptism place of Joan of Arc. This was during the time of the hundred years war, still remembered in this area! Poitiers has two notable cathedrals, one English and the other French. They have both been renovated in the last few years and are now magnificent.
Close to Poitiers is Futuroscope, famed for its cinemas - it is the theme park of the moving image. Surrounding Futuroscope are the headquarters of a number of hi-tec companies or at least their important research centres.
In the east of the department is found the Chateau of the Eagles where stunning displays of flying by very large birds under the control of their handlers, takes place every day. In this area you can also find the Isle des Serpents which is a reptile park having a wide selection of interesting reptiles.
This is not too far from Montmorillon, now designated as the Town of writing and everything associated with paper, inks, calligraphy and books. Also close by is Chauvigny in which Apilco, part of Royal Saint Petersburg, have their factory outlet of porcelain.
In the west of the department there is "Le Valley des Singes" a 100 hectare primate park in which you can walk and see close up a wide variety of monkeys, apes, gorillas and even human beings.
We are in the bottom right at Availles Limouzine on the river Vienne. close by is Pressac, and down river is L'Isle Jourdain, whilst up river just over the boundary is St Germain de Confolens and Confolens
